Early Orthodontics
Setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles
Why Early Orthodontic Evaluation Matters
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, children have a mix of baby and permanent teeth, and we can identify potential issues with jaw growth and emerging teeth.
Early evaluation doesn't always mean early treatment, but it allows us to monitor your child's development and intervene at the optimal time if treatment is needed. This proactive approach can prevent more serious problems and reduce the need for more invasive treatment later.
What is Phase 1 Treatment?
Phase 1, or early interceptive treatment, typically occurs between ages 7-10 while your child still has most of their baby teeth. The goal is to create a better environment for permanent teeth to erupt and to guide jaw growth in the right direction.
This early intervention can address issues like crossbites, severe crowding, protruding front teeth, and habits like thumb sucking. By addressing these problems early, we can often simplify or even eliminate the need for more extensive treatment during the teenage years.
Common Issues Treated with Early Orthodontics
- Crossbites: When upper teeth sit inside lower teeth, affecting jaw growth
- Severe Crowding: Lack of space for permanent teeth to erupt properly
- Protruding Teeth: Front teeth that stick out and are at risk for injury
- Underbites: Lower jaw that grows too far forward
- Spacing Issues: Gaps that may cause alignment problems
- Oral Habits: Thumb sucking or tongue thrusting affecting development
What to Expect
During your child's initial consultation, Dr. Dyerwill perform a thorough examination, take digital images, and discuss any concerns you may have. If early treatment is recommended, we'll create a customized plan that addresses your child's specific needs.
Phase 1 treatment typically lasts 12-18 months, followed by a resting period where we monitor permanent teeth as they erupt. Many patients will still benefit from Phase 2 treatment during adolescence, but this second phase is often shorter and simpler thanks to the foundation laid during early treatment.
